Unique Wine Decanting Accessory Uses A Simple Vacuum System To Avoid Wasting Wine

Michael Zanatta

I recently discovered and purchased this amazing wine accessory that enables you to enhance the flavors and aromas of your wine, but also provides an excellent system to preserve any remaining wine for you to enjoy later. Metrokane?s V-1 Decanter, designed by Ed Kilduff of Pollen Design, is the world?s first decanter with a vacuum seal. It is available from a growing number of wine accessory vendors.

According to Ed, the unique design was inspired by the shape of NASA?s Apollo Command Module. Each unit is individually hand-blown from lead-free crystalline quartz. But the secret behind this marvelous wine preservation accessory is the Vacuum Stopper. The stopper contains uses a manual pump to remove air from the decanter preventing over oxidation and ruining the remaining wine, and an analog gauge to visually indicate when the proper amount of vacuum has been achieved.

Here?s the simple step by step process:

1. Insert the Vacuum Stopper into the decanter. There?s no need to exert a lot of pressure when putting it in the decanter. (Critical: Do not use the vacuum stopper in a decanter other than Metrokane V-1)

2. Position the vacuum pump on the stopper

3. Use the pump to remove the air from the decanter by bringing the reading on the Vacuum Gauge to the ?red zone?

The V-1 performed quite well under several conditions and scenarios I tried. As a first test, I decanted a wonderful bottle of Sonoma Valley Zinfandel that I?ve enjoyed many times. Making sure to leave around half the bottle in the decanter, I followed their simple instructions to vacuum seal, and then left the decanter in a cool, dimly lit location. Daily, I observed the vacuum gauge to confirm that a good seal was maintained (in fact, there was no reduction in pressure at all).

Six days later I released the seal and tasted the wine. I found no discernable difference in taste from when I had previously enjoyed the wine. While the decanter had done its job of aerating to enhance the wine?s character, the vacuum seal had succeeded in preventing the harmful effects of over oxidation. At additional times I set the vacuum sealed decanter aside for periods of four to ten days and found the wine to be just as wonderful as when I first uncorked it.

I rank this as an excellent wine accessory that should definitely be considered by even the casual wine connoisseur. I could not be more pleased with how this product performed. With this decanter you don?t need to hesitate when uncorking a great bottle of wine, worried that you will have to either drink the entire bottle or allow the remaining wine to be wasted from over oxidation.
